On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) reversed its previous decision and lifted the injunction against the election of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. This ruling paved the way for the government to conduct elections for this esteemed position.
During the hearing, Justice Anwaar Hussain carefully considered all the arguments presented and delivered his decision on the petition for a stay order against the elections. Following this, the consolidated petitions were referred to Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial for further review.
Last week, the LHC temporarily halted the chairman’s election by suspending the notification issued by the Board of Governors. The court also notified the federal government, the PCB election commissioner, and other relevant parties.
One of the petitions, filed by Malik Zulifqar, asserted that Chief Election Commissioner Shahzad Farooq Rana had made unauthorized alterations to the list of the Board of Governors, which the interim management committee had already finalized on June 20. The petition argued that the chief election commissioner’s actions violated the law.
In response to the plea, the court granted a stay order on the matter, as requested by the petitioner.
It is worth mentioning that last week, the Balochistan High Court also ordered a halt to the election of the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman until further notice.
Given the Eid ul Adha holidays and the court’s two-week summer vacation, the court proceedings will resume, and arguments will be heard on July 17.
