The renowned French captain Kylian Mbappe is poised to become the majority owner of SM Caen, a Ligue 2 club.
According to French media reports on Monday, Mbappe, who recently transferred to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, will acquire an 80% stake in the club for 20 million euros ($21.6 million). This move will transfer ownership from the American investment group Oaktree.
The 25-year-old World Cup winner had previously considered joining Caen during his early career before opting for Monaco. Last season, Caen finished sixth in Ligue 2, a league known for nurturing talents like Mbappe’s national teammate N’Golo Kante and former French defender William Gallas.
Established in 1913 and twice crowned Ligue 2 champions, Caen will begin its new season by hosting Paris FC on August 17.
