Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid’s star striker, acknowledged a “big mistake” after missing a penalty in the team’s 2-1 La Liga loss to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday. Coming shortly after a similar miss in the Champions League against Liverpool, this mishap contributed to Real Madrid’s defeat, allowing league leaders Barcelona to maintain a four-point lead.
The match intensified just after halftime when Athletic’s Alejandro Berenguer scored, and Jude Bellingham later equalized for Madrid following Mbappe’s missed penalty. However, Athletic clinched victory in the 80th minute through substitute Gorka Guruzeta, capitalizing on a mistake by Fede Valverde.
Reflecting on the miss, Mbappe expressed his accountability via Instagram: “A big mistake in a match where every detail counts. I take full responsibility for it. It’s a difficult moment, but it’s the best time to change this situation and show who I am.”
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti commented on Mbappe’s mood: “Obviously, he is sad, disappointed, but he has to continue.” Ancelotti noted that while Mbappe is currently not at his best level, time and patience are needed as he integrates into the team.
Despite his challenges, Mbappe played a key role in Madrid’s temporary equalizer, driving a shot that led to Bellingham’s goal. Yet, Athletic quickly responded with Guruzeta’s goal, leaving Madrid to reflect on their fifth-season defeat. This loss adds pressure on Mbappe, who has been under scrutiny despite scoring 10 goals in his first 20 games for the club.
