KPK Govt to construct three small dams in Karak, Nowshera

The provincial government has planned to construct three small dams in Karak and Nowshera districts in order to generate inexpensive electricity to consumers besides provide irrigation water for uplift of agriculture and industrial sectors.

To support the Federal Govt. endeavors for addressing the problem of energy shortfall in the country, the provincial government has announced construction of Latambar dam in Karak district and Mairoobi and Jaroba dams in Nowshera to address problems of load shedding besides provide cheap electricity and water for agriculture and industrial consumption.

An Official of Irrigation Department told APP on Tuesday that these projects have been included in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for fiscal year 2015-16 and work on it would commence soon.

The preliminary feasibility study of these projects has been completed and process of sites selection completed, he added.

The Govt also include Naran dam with power generation capacity of 188MW in district Manshera, construction of power stations of Gorband at Shangla district, Nand Bahar at Batagram, Mojigram Shagoor, Astar Rabooni, Arkari Gol at Chitral would generate 206MW electricity in ADP 2015-16 with significant financial allocation.

Ranolia Kohistan, Machi Mardan and Dararkhwar Swat with power generation capacity of 55.6 megawatt power projects would be completed by December 2015, the official said, adding work on Machi Mardan with 2.6 MW and Ranolia Kohistan 17 MW has been completed and are ready for execution whereas Swat Dararkhwar with 36 MW capacity would start production by December this year.

Small power stations at Shringal Dir Upper, Patrak Barikot in Swat and Segokatch would also be constructed that would generate 171MW electricity besides construction of 10microhydle power plants on canals and setting up of a technical laboratory in the province.

Installation of tube-wells run on solar system would be increased besides construction of protection walls under Dir Lower Balambat Irrigation Scheme-Phase-II and water streams and lakes in KPK.

Work on improvement in water pounds at Sheikh Canal and Civil Katha, Khesgi Irrigation Lift Scheme, rehabilitation and repair of 460 kilometers roads on banks of canals in the province would be started besides extension of bridge at Panyala DI Khan in upcoming fiscal year.

The KPK Government allocated Rs. 6.87billion on 202 projects on irrigation sector uplift in upcoming fiscal year with 45 percent more against ongoing fiscal year, the official said.

The completion of these projects would not only increase per acre agriculture production but also provide raw material to industries and would generate inexpensive electricity to consumers. (APP)
