The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government, under the leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), formally requested the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9.
The KP government requested that the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), Ishtiaq Ibrahim, constitute a probe committee on Sunday.
In an interview with Geo News, KP Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi confirmed sending the request to establish the commission. He added that the Chief Justice would announce the commission members, noting that a PHC judge would lead the commission.
Earlier, the KP cabinet approved the creation of the judicial commission during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
The establishment of this commission responds to persistent demands from PTI for a judicial review of the May 9 protests, which erupted nationwide last year following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case. The protests witnessed violence, with damage to public and private properties and attacks on military installations across the country.
In May, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan reiterated the party’s call for a judicial inquiry into the incidents, which Chief Minister Gandapur strongly supported.
