The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government announced a public holiday for the first day of Muharram, the start of the Islamic lunar calendar. Consequently, this decision aligns with the moon sighting by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The Department of Administrative Affairs issued a notification confirming the closure of all government offices, schools, and businesses on the day.
Muharram is the first month of the lunar calendar and holds profound importance in Islam. Specifically, the 1st of Muharram is observed as Youm-e-Umar, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Caliph. He was assassinated on 1 Muharram 23 AH, corresponding to 644 CE. This day invites reflection on his legacy of justice and leadership.
Furthermore, the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein ibn Ali, his family, and companions during the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH (680 CE). This event symbolises sacrifice and resistance against oppression. Therefore, Ashura carries deep spiritual weight for Muslims, particularly within the Shia community.

The holiday ensures residents can observe these significant days with reverence. As a result, public services will pause, allowing participation in religious activities. The government’s alignment with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee underscores respect for Islamic traditions. Moreover, this closure fosters community unity during a time of reflection.
