In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), a complex environment is rapidly developing as local businessmen and industrialists confront escalating extortion threats. The law and order situation has deteriorated to a critical point, causing concern among the community and the province’s broader population.
The President of Hayyatabad Industrial State, Malik Imran Ishaq, disclosed the unsettling reality that businessmen in the area continually receive extortion slips. In a chilling escalation, unknown perpetrators have resorted to grenade attacks on the homes and offices of those who do not meet the extortion demands.
Calls for Government Intervention
As the spokesperson for KP industrialists, Malik Imran Ishaq has made an urgent plea to the government for protection. Should their security not be guaranteed, he expressed their readiness to shut down their industrial units—a decision carrying potentially significant economic ramifications for the region and province.
The current state of law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is of great concern to businessmen and the province’s residents. A recent report shows an alarming 411 incidents reported in 2022 alone, with 342 relating to extortion.
The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has shown some responsiveness to this crisis. They registered First Information Reports (FIRs) for 69 extortion incidents and successfully arrested 173 individuals in these extortion activities in 2022. Despite these actions, the threats persist, highlighting the urgent need for increased government attention and intervention.
