Defence Minister Khawaja Asif disclosed that former Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa had threatened to impose martial law.
During an appearance on Geo News’ “Capital Talk,” Asif claimed that General Bajwa issued this threat privately and during public gatherings.
In a dialogue with the host, Hamid Mir, the question of holding General Bajwa accountable for his threats was raised. Minister Asif challenged the feasibility of such accountability, questioning who would hold Bajwa accountable.
Despite admitting to potential lapses in his memory, Minister Asif affirmed his clear recollection of past events. He also addressed perceived discrepancies in narratives between himself and Malik Ahmed, attributing them to differing contexts rather than factual divergence.
Further elaborating on General Bajwa’s political manoeuvres, Minister Asif revealed that Bajwa had requested an extension of six months to a year during a caretaker period. He also accused Bajwa of orchestrating the rise to power of the PTI’s founder, whom he alleged General Bajwa supported for four years, highlighting the close ties between General Bajwa and General Faiz.
Minister Asif criticized the actions of the PTI’s founder against Nawaz Sharif and his family, questioning the absence of a judicial commission at that time. He noted the inconsistency in the PTI founder’s frequent calls for judicial commissions. He suggested the government consider establishing a judicial commission regarding General Faiz if necessary.
