Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia remains in critical condition after being hospitalised with a lung infection. The 80-year-old political leader’s deteriorating health has prompted her family and party members to request public prayers for her recovery.
Zia was admitted to the hospital on November 23 and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir confirmed her precarious condition, stating that “doctors have told us that her condition is very critical.”
The former prime minister suffers from multiple serious health conditions, including heart problems, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. She has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent cardiac stenting procedures.

Zia’s eldest son, Tarique Rahman, appealed for public prayers from London, where he has lived since 2008. In a social media statement, Rahman expressed gratitude for public support while explaining his inability to return to Bangladesh due to circumstances beyond his control.
The three-time former prime minister was imprisoned in 2018 on corruption charges under Sheikh Hasina’s government, which also restricted her from seeking medical treatment abroad. Zia received release last year following Hasina’s removal from power.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus described Zia as “a source of utmost inspiration for the nation” during Bangladesh’s transitional period toward democracy. Her recovery carries significant political importance as her Bangladesh Nationalist Party emerges as a frontrunner for the expected February 2026 elections.
Despite her serious health challenges, Zia has previously committed to campaigning in the upcoming elections. Senior BNP leaders and supporters continue gathering at the hospital for updates on her condition as the political community monitors developments closely.
