On September 16, 2025, FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed the motive behind the shooting death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. Tyler Robinson told investigators he believed “some hatred cannot be negotiated with.” Patel revealed this during a Fox News interview, while Robinson faces charges in court.
Patel explained that investigators found a text message in which Robinson admitted he had the chance to “take out” Kirk and acted on it. When asked why, Robinson gave the chilling reply. FBI and local law enforcement interviewed Robinson, who effectively confessed to the crime. Patel stated that more details will emerge, but declined to “stylise the evidence.”
Patel will face Senate scrutiny over the probe. Critics, including conservatives like Christopher Rufo, question whether he is fit to lead the FBI. Rufo called Patel’s performance “terrible” and doubted his expertise in handling violent threats. Radio host Erick Erickson called the FBI situation “concerning.” National Review’s Michael Brendan Dougherty criticised the agency because it relied on Robinson’s father to turn him in and questioned the “self-radicalised narrative.”

Patel defended his approach on Fox & Friends, saying he kept the public informed in real-time. He explained that the FBI arrested suspects early to clear innocent people and emphasised transparency as key under his leadership. A spokesperson said the FBI collaborates with Utah authorities and commits to ongoing updates. Four former FBI officials called some posts premature.
Robinson’s father turned him in 44 hours after the shooting, leading authorities to arrest him. The FBI botched three arrests during the manhunt. Patel dined at Rao’s restaurant in New York during the search, though it is unclear if this coincided with his posts. President Donald Trump praised the FBI, saying that Patel and his team did a “great job.”

The Senate confirmed Patel as FBI Director in February 2025 by a 51-49 vote after Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski opposed him. His tenure has faced controversy, including the FBI’s refusal to release all Jeffrey Epstein files, despite promises from Patel and Trump.
