Bollywood director Karan Johar criticized Bollywood’s lack of originality and labeled the Indian Film Industry weak for fearing new things and following trends.
Karan has criticized the film business, including himself, for not generating enough original content.
In a recent interview, Karan noted, “I think the basic issue is that we come from a mainstream sector in Hindi cinema, which doesn’t have one really strong attribute that every other cinema on this panel has.” Confidence. We’re pretty easygoing. Salim-Javed was a 70s original.
Other films inspired our moody, furious hero. Then, in the 1980s, remakes became popular. That’s when conviction slipped. We remade Tamil and Telugu films.
In the 1990s, Hum Aapke Hain Koun rocked the nation. Everyone, including me, jumped on the Shah Rukh Khan bandwagon. In the 1970s, we abandoned our roots.
Then Lagaan was Oscar-nominated in 2001, and everyone made similar flicks. 2010’s Dabangg was successful, so we made more commercials. Exactly. We lack courage and conviction, and I say this mostly about myself. All other industries must do the same.”
