Karachi’s water supply stopped after a power breakdown resulted in the bursting of a 72-inch pipeline at the Dhabeji pumping station.
The Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) reported that four pumps were shut down following the breakdown, suspending the daily distribution of 530 million gallons of water to the bustling port city. As of now, the water board has not provided information regarding any alternate water supply arrangements.
H2: Authorities Urge Citizens to Conserve Water
Following the incident, the KWSB issued a statement calling Karachi residents to use water sparingly until a solution is implemented.
Karachi primarily depends on two sources for its water supply: Keenjhar Lake and the Hub Dam. Water from these sources is pumped into the city through three main stations at Dhabeji, Gharo, and Hub. Of these, the Hub Dam alone provides 100 million gallons of water to Karachi daily.
Situated 56 km from Karachi, the Hub Dam extends over 24,300 acres with a gross storage capacity of 857,000 acre-feet water.
The dam, with a total capacity of 339 feet, is crucial in meeting the city’s water needs. The recent pipeline damage at the Dhabeji station has underscored the importance of maintaining these crucial infrastructure components for the city’s water supply.
