Residents of Karachi can finally relax as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) declared the restoration of the water supply on Friday after weeks of water scarcity caused by essential repairs on the main pipeline along University Road.
The KWSC spokesperson confirmed that the 84-inch water pipeline, affected by the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project, has been fully repaired after experiencing three consecutive leakages.
With the repairs complete, 12 pumps have resumed operation, revitalizing the water supply to areas around University Road. Additionally, service from the Dhabeji Pumping Station has been reinstated.

The pipeline initially burst on November 29 due to the construction activities of the BRT Red Line project, causing repeated leakages. This disruption necessitated the shutdown of several pumps at the Dhabeji station.
The leakages resulted in the loss of thousands of gallons of water and a complete cessation of water service to various neighbourhoods. These included Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Mosmiyat, Safoora, and several blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, along with Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Jamshed Road, New MA Jinnah Road, Ramaswamy, Ranchor Lane, Garden, Lyari, Saddar, and Lines Area.

The ruptured pipeline resulted in a considerable daily water shortage of 150 million gallons. Although there were several repair attempts, leaks continued until the latest successful restoration was completed.
The repair represents a major enhancement to the infrastructure and is expected to significantly ease the water scarcity problems experienced by residents of Karachi after the pipeline’s initial damage.
