Amid a global protest wave, Karachi University students rallied at the campus’s main gate on Thursday, showing support for Palestine amidst the Gaza conflict.
The rally, involving male and female students from multiple universities, started at KU’s Silver Jubilee gate and proceeded towards NED University.
One student organizer, preferring anonymity, expressed the event’s peaceful intent, emphasizing, “This is Karachi’s youth speaking.”
The students displayed banners and placards that depicted Gaza’s dire situation. Another organizer commented on the complexity of obtaining rally permissions due to the issue’s sensitivity.
University leaders noted that the protests were student-driven, with no formal permissions sought from faculties or administrations. Artistic representations of the conflict and students wearing keffiyehs highlighted the solidarity theme.
A KU student emphasized the importance of student involvement in global issues, saying, “Our voices must be part of the global dialogue.” Muhammad Haseebullah, a software engineering student at BUKC, expressed the communal awareness of Palestinian hardships, “We stand with Palestine, fully aware of their distress.”
Eman Shakeel called for active resistance against the atrocities, noting, “We must awaken the Muslim community to action.” A participant voiced a call for Muslim nations to act, frustrated with Israeli policies, “We need a unified Muslim response to these injustices.”
Previously, over two hundred Karachi University professors, including deans and senior academics, signed a letter showing solidarity with U.S. campus protests against the Gaza situation.
