Karachi’s University Road is closed to traffic after a water pipeline was damaged during the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
On Monday, Karachi’s University Road was closed to traffic following damage to a water pipeline during the ongoing construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Traffic police confirmed that Water Board officials and machinery had been dispatched near Old Sabzi Mandi for repairs.
This closure has caused significant traffic disruptions between Hassan Square and New Town, prompting authorities to redirect commuters to alternative routes. NIPA vehicles are diverted via the Expo turning, while Essa Nagri’s vehicles are redirected towards the stadium through the Hassan Square bridge.
Motorists should use alternate routes to avoid congestion in the affected areas.
The BRT project, which aims to improve public transportation in the city, has faced criticism for its impact on infrastructure. The Sindh High Court (SHC) recently summoned Karachi’s mayor and the transport secretary over concerns about tree-cutting along the BRT route.

The secretary of forests clarified that while the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is responsible for trees within city limits, the forest department’s jurisdiction extends only beyond urban areas. The court has requested a report from the KMC on this issue.
