A Karachi traffic police rescue drew widespread attention after a sergeant saved a man who had jumped from a bridge in the city’s Liaquatabad area. A video of the incident spread across social media, showing the officer acting quickly to prevent a possible tragedy.
According to ARY News Pakistan, the man, believed to be a drug addict, climbed over the safety wall of the Liaquatabad flyover and ended up hanging dangerously from overhead wires. Passersby raised the alarm and alerted a nearby traffic police officer.
The officer responded immediately. He stopped a passenger bus passing beneath the flyover, climbed onto its roof, and reached the hanging man before pulling him to safety. His quick action prevented what could have turned into a fatal incident.
The viral video also captured the crowd’s reaction. Some bystanders urged the officer to beat the man, but he stayed calm, avoided using force, and handled the situation professionally.
A day earlier, another incident had already shaken residents in Karachi. Reports said a group of armed robbers allegedly set up a checkpoint on the Shah Faisal Colony–Korangi bridge and looted commuters at gunpoint. Residents claimed 12 to 15 suspects blocked the bridge, carried Kalashnikovs and other weapons, and assaulted people who resisted.
The suspects placed barriers to stop vehicles before robbing commuters and escaping towards a nearby settlement. However, police gave a different version of events. They said three suspects tried to intercept a vehicle late at night, but the driver escaped by driving on the wrong side of the road, causing panic and a traffic jam.
Police said they reached the scene quickly and fired warning shots in the air, but the suspects managed to flee. Officials also said no formal complaint of robbery had been registered.
The two incidents have added to public anxiety over rising street crime in Karachi. Residents are now calling for immediate steps to strengthen security and restore confidence on the city’s roads and bridges.
