The Karachi administration has announced new sugar prices across the city. The Commissioner of Karachi has set the wholesale rate at Rs140 per kilogram and the retail price at Rs143 per kilogram.
The commissioner’s office issued a notification confirming that the prices take effect immediately and will remain valid until further notice. Authorities have barred all sellers from charging rates above the official price list.
The commissioner warned that officials will take legal action against violators. He also directed wholesalers and retailers to display the official price list in their shops prominently.
Wholesale Rates Show Decline
Earlier this month, the Wholesale Grocers Association reported a drop in sugar prices at wholesale markets. Chairman Abdul Rauf Ibrahim said prices fell by Rs6 per kilogram, easing pressure on traders.

He said wholesale rates in Karachi declined to Rs146 per kilogram, while ex-mill prices dropped to Rs142 per kilogram after the crushing season began. According to him, prices have fallen by Rs54 per kilogram since December 1.
Despite the decline, retail prices remained high, with sugar selling for Rs170-Rs180 per kilogram in many areas. Ibrahim attributed the gap between wholesale and retail rates to weak monitoring.
He expressed confidence that prices could fall further to around Rs120 per kilogram by month-end if authorities ensure effective oversight. He urged regulators to act so that consumers benefit from lower wholesale prices.
