Karachi’s Additional Inspector General (IG), Javed Alam Odho, shed light on the underlying reasons for the increasing street crimes in the city.
Drawing attention to the adverse economic conditions prevailing in the area, Odho explained that financial desperation pushes criminals to extremes. “The circumstances have made criminals so desperate that they are now risking taking citizens’ lives during confrontations,” remarked the Additional IG. The grim observation comes amid rising concerns over the safety of Karachi’s residents.
The Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Report
A recently released report by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) further reinforces the severity of the situation. Between January 1 and July 31, 2023, the bustling city recorded over 52,000 street crime incidents, leaving residents and authorities deeply concerned.
The specifics of the report paint an even more harrowing picture:
- More than 80 residents lost their lives trying to resist robberies.
- A staggering 16,000+ individuals were deprived of their mobile phones during robberies.
- Vehicle theft also showcased a worrying trend, with 33,798 motorcycles and 2,296 cars reported stolen or forcibly taken during the year’s first seven months.
Despite the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies and the establishment of numerous safety measures, criminal gangs continue to operate unabated in Karachi. The persisting problem demands stricter security implementations and socio-economic solutions to address the root causes propelling individuals into crime.
