Sharjeel Memon, Sindh’s Information Minister, revealed a visionary plan to launch electric vehicle (EV) taxis in Karachi, aiming to transform urban transportation while creating job opportunities for the city’s youth.
During an event attended by Chinese and Pakistani investors, Memon highlighted the success of recent public-private partnerships and the positive impact of multiple energy and agriculture projects formalized through Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs). He noted that these efforts are set to significantly strengthen Pakistan’s economy, particularly through the continued expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Launching Eco-Friendly Transport Solutions
In his address, Memon shared plans for launching an eco-friendly taxi service in Karachi. This EV taxi initiative is part of a broader strategy to create viable employment opportunities for young people in the region. The event also facilitated valuable interactions between Chinese investors and Pakistani business representatives, fostering further collaboration.
Despite challenges, Memon reassured that Chinese investors remain dedicated to supporting Pakistani ventures. He lauded China’s consistent support during difficult times and guaranteed comprehensive security for all investors in Sindh.

Echoing PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s vision, Memon reiterated the government’s dedication to empowering youth and women and enhancing sectors like agriculture, livestock, and industry for sustainable development.
First EV and Pink EV Taxis in Pakistan
To address Karachi’s critical air pollution issues, Memon had previously introduced Pakistan’s first EV taxis, including special pink EV taxis, in July 2024. These taxis are designed to offer a cleaner, more affordable transportation option for Karachi’s residents, complementing the recent introduction of hybrid and electric buses under the Peoples Bus Service fleet.
