The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a fresh heatwave alert for Karachi on April 20, 2025, forecasting temperatures up to 41°C, high humidity, and minimal sea breeze until April 23.
The intense conditions, driven by a western weather system, are expected to exacerbate discomfort, prompting urgent public safety measures.
Karachi recorded a morning temperature of 27°C with 56% humidity, significantly amplifying the heat index. The PMD predicts daytime temperatures between 37°C and 41°C, with Saturday’s high already reaching 36.5°C at 26% humidity.

Currently at 9 km/h, wind speeds may rise to 30–35 km/h, but hot, dry winds from Balochistan’s deserts offer little relief. PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaighum says the absence of the cooling sea breeze, potentially ceasing entirely during the day, worsens the situation.
The heatwave, linked to dropping air pressure from a western weather system, mirrors extreme conditions elsewhere. Jacobabad hit 45°C, 6.5°C above normal. Zaighum noted that a post-sunset sea breeze might provide minor relief, but daytime inactivity could intensify the crisis.
