The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi. From April 20 to April 23, 2025, daytime temperatures are forecast to be 4 to 6°C above normal, potentially exceeding 40°C.
The PMD predicts that maximum temperatures in Karachi could reach 40°C during the heatwave, driven by a high-pressure system. Humidity levels are expected to hover around 50% during the day and drop to 25% in the evening, intensifying discomfort. This combination increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and women.
Authorities recommend minimising outdoor exposure during peak sunlight hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and staying well-hydrated by drinking water and electrolyte-rich fluids. Wearing lightweight, loose clothing and avoiding strenuous activities are also advised to prevent heatstroke and dehydration.
Weather Across Pakistan
While Karachi braces for extreme heat, other regions may see relief. Upper and central Sindh districts could experience gusty winds, slightly easing ongoing heatwave conditions. Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, Pothohar, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are forecast to receive rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms within the next 12 hours, with isolated heavy rain and hailstorms possible.
