Karachi is experiencing a severe heatwave, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicting temperatures to reach 40°C starting May 25, 2025. High humidity and minimal sea breeze could push the perceived temperature to 45°C in coastal areas, creating challenging conditions for residents.
The PMD reports that humidity levels are 74%, with westerly winds blowing at 17 km/h. Strong sunshine and low wind activity during daytime hours will heighten discomfort. The forecast predicts hot and humid weather for the next 24 hours, with temperatures between 40°C and 41°C through Friday.
Meteorological analyst Owais Hyder notes that a low-pressure system over Maharashtra, India, will not bring rainfall to Sindh, including Karachi. No rain is expected this week, prolonging the dry, scorching conditions.
Health experts urge residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Dr. Aisha Khan, a Karachi-based physician, advises, “Hydration is critical during a heatwave. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues, especially for children and the elderly.”
To stay safe, follow these tips:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink water, lemon water, or yoghurt-based drinks like lassi regularly.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
- Protect Against Sunlight: Use a cap, scarf, or umbrella outdoors.
- Adjust Your Diet: Opt for light, fresh meals and avoid heavy, spicy, or fried foods.
- Monitor Symptoms: Seek immediate medical attention for dizziness, nausea, weakness, or high fever.
The heatwave poses risks for those outdoors during peak afternoon hours. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities between noon and 4 p.m. Local authorities have encouraged public awareness campaigns to promote heat safety.
