Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nomination, setting her sights on redefining her image and establishing a clear contrast with Republican Donald Trump.
Amid roaring cheers at the Democratic National Convention, Harris declared, “On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination for president of the United States.”
Just over a month ago, President Joe Biden’s allies convinced him to exit the race, positioning Harris as the Democratic candidate. She now stands a chance to become the first woman elected as president of the United States.
The Democratic National Convention in Chicago, spanning four days, drew significant figures from politics and music. The event peaked on the final night at the packed United Center, which filled as the city’s fire marshal announced.
The White House reported that before her speech, Biden called Harris to wish her luck. In her address, Harris committed to being “a president for all Americans,” directly challenging Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
Having served nearly four years as vice president, Harris, a former California attorney general, has consistently been a presidential hopeful despite a challenging campaign in 2020. “With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans,” she articulated.
The convention’s highlights included performances by The Chicks and Pink and a standing ovation for the Central Park Five, who had been wrongly convicted of rape as teenagers. Senator Elizabeth Warren strongly endorsed Harris, and former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords and others affected by gun violence made notable appearances.
Former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger, a Republican who voted to impeach then-President Trump, was among several Republicans speaking against Trump at the convention. “Democracy knows no party,” Kinzinger remarked, emphasizing the patriotism of Democrats.
Democrats have positioned themselves as the voice of American values, from small towns to international affairs, as the Nov. 5 election approaches. Harris has sparked a wave of voter enthusiasm, breaking fundraising records with $500 million in one month and closing the gap with Trump in key battleground states.
Issues such as U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict drew protests outside the convention centre but received little attention within, potentially impacting voter support. Delegates from the Uncommitted National Movement also protested for more inclusion at the convention.

Despite Republican claims that Democrats have focused too much on criticizing Trump rather than detailing their governance plans, Harris’ aides indicated she would outline tax cuts for most Americans, housing boosts, and anti-price gouging measures in her campaign. Her speech also planned to cover foreign policy and the impacts of reproductive rights restrictions.
