K-Electric issued a stern warning on Saturday, threatening to disconnect power to Sindh government departments due to unpaid bills totalling billions of rupees.
Sources indicated that the Government of Sindh and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) have not settled their accounts with K-Electric since January. This non-payment has precipitated a financial crisis for K-Electric, complicating the maintenance of its network.
K-Electric has sent multiple communications to significant officials, including the Sindh Secretary of Finance and the Mayor of Karachi, demanding clearance for these overdue electricity bills to recover the funds.
Throughout May, K-Electric dispatched five reminders urging prompt settlement of these debts. The Water and Sewerage Board’s outstanding balance amounts to 5 billion rupees.
The company has cautioned that the network might collapse without timely payment, potentially leading to extended power outages across Karachi.
K-Electric and the Sindh government agreed to establish a joint committee to address the ongoing power supply issues. This decision was made during today’s high-level meeting, attended by Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah and K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi, among other senior officials.
The newly formed committee will focus on several critical areas, including addressing public complaints about load shedding, ensuring bill payments are made on time, and devising strategies to reduce power interruptions and maintain a stable electricity supply throughout Karachi.
CEO Moonis Alvi emphasized K-Electric’s dedication to supporting Karachi residents, especially during heatwaves, but he reiterated that a continuous power supply hinges on resolving outstanding payments.
