On May 17, 2025, Indian travel vlogger Jyoti Malhotra, from Hisar, Haryana, was arrested on espionage charges linked to Pakistan, amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people, per NDTV.
Authorities allege that Malhotra, who operates the YouTube channel “Travel with Jo,” which has 382,000 subscribers, shared sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence during a visit in 2023.
Indian police allege that Malhotra contacted a Pakistani diplomat and visited Pahalgam three months before the attack, which raises suspicions. Her vlog from Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar, where she praised Pakistani hospitality, attracted scrutiny from pro-government media. Additionally, some outlets criticised her earlier trips to China, Indonesia, and Bhutan, where she highlighted local culture and infrastructure. However, there is no evidence connecting these activities to espionage.

The arrest has ignited a debate on Indian social media, with posts on X expressing concern about the diminishing space for independent creators. Police statements suggested that Malhotra had been “developed as an asset” for Pakistan, linking her case to a wider scrutiny of influencers, although such claims remain unverified. Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has called for a thorough investigation to ensure fairness.
Pak-Indo Political Context
Observers suggest Malhotra’s arrest reflects India’s heightened security climate post-Pahalgam, with allegations of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) involvement, per The Economic Times.
Critics argue the case may align with efforts to enforce narratives tied to Hindutva ideology, though no direct evidence supports this. Malhotra’s vlogs, seen as neutral cultural content, are viewed by some as unfairly politicised.
