Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears set to lose his position early next year as a crucial ally announced plans to topple the minority Liberal government and prompt an election. Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party, who has supported Trudeau’s administration, revealed his intention to introduce a formal no-confidence motion when the House of Commons reconvenes on January 27 after the winter break.

If all opposition parties back the motion, Trudeau will resign after more than nine years, triggering an election. Recent polling shows substantial voter discontent with the Liberals, fueled by anger over escalating costs and a housing crisis. This could result in a significant loss to the right-of-centre Conservatives.

The New Democrats, targeting centre-left voters like the Liberals, have criticized Trudeau for his close ties to large corporations. “No matter who leads the Liberal Party, this government’s time has ended. We will present a definitive non-confidence motion in the next session,” Singh declared.

The Bloc Quebecois, a significant opposition party, has expressed its backing for the motion, with its leader asserting that no situation would permit Trudeau to continue in power. The Conservatives have consistently called for an election. Amid these events, under growing pressure following his finance minister’s abrupt resignation, Trudeau successfully conducted a cabinet reshuffle, maintaining a smile.

Liberal leaders are chosen through special party conventions, which require months to organize. Singh’s swift action implies that even if Trudeau resigns now, the Liberals could not appoint a new permanent leader before the next election, potentially leading to their first campaign under an interim leader.

Approximately 20 Liberal legislators have publicly urged Trudeau to resign, though his cabinet remains supportive.

This political crisis arises at a pivotal time, with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump preparing to take office on January 20. His proposal for a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports presents a significant risk to Canada’s economy.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the ten provinces strive for a unified response to the tariffs and are voicing concerns over the ongoing turmoil in Ottawa.
