Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput formally assumed office as the new Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Governor’s House in Karachi, where Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori administered the oath of office.
President Asif Ali Zardari made the appointment following a nomination by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). Prominent figures, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and a full bench of sitting SHC judges, attended the ceremony.
This appointment is among the first of its kind following the 27th Constitutional Amendment and the establishment of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). Earlier this week, the JCP recommended appointing permanent chief justices to both the SHC and the Balochistan High Court (BHC), proposing Justice Rajput for Sindh and Justice Muhammad Kamran Khan Mulakhail for Balochistan.
Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput brings extensive judicial experience to the role. Born on October 16, 1965, he earned his LLB from Government Jinnah Law College, Hyderabad, and a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Sindh.
He began his legal career as an advocate in 1990, entered the judicial service as a magistrate in 1993, and rose through the ranks. He was elevated to the bench of the Sindh High Court on August 31, 2013, and has since served at the principal seat in Karachi, as well as at benches in Sukkur, Hyderabad, and Larkana.
Justice Rajput most recently served as the Acting Chief Justice of the SHC since September 15, 2025. His permanent appointment brings stability and leadership to one of Pakistan’s most significant high courts.
