Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred made Olympic history by winning the women’s 100m gold, securing her country’s first-ever medal.
On Saturday, she delivered a stunning performance at the Stade de France, crossing the finish line in 10.72 seconds. American runners Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson captured silver and bronze with 10.87 seconds and 10.92 seconds, respectively.
The reigning world champion Richardson entered as a favourite but could not match Alfred’s explosive start and consistent speed. Despite the rain, Alfred dominated the race, from the blocks to the tape.
This victory marks Saint Lucia’s inaugural Olympic medal since their debut in 1996 and underscores Alfred’s rise, having never previously medaled at a major outdoor championships. She had signalled her competitive edge in the semifinals, besting Richardson with a time of 10.89 seconds, hinting at the upset to come.
After her historic win, Alfred, overwhelmed with emotion, celebrated by ringing the victory bell, draping herself in the Saint Lucian flag, and sharing a moment of camaraderie with her American competitors.
