The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) agreed on constitutional amendments.
JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced during a joint press conference in Karachi.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman praised Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for achieving consensus on the draft of the constitutional amendments. He added that he had met with Bilawal and would be meeting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday.
However, Maulana Fazlur Rehman rejected the government’s initial proposals, labelling them unacceptable. He emphasized the need for non-controversial amendments, stating that the nation, constitution, and parliament require a united stance.
At the event, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari confirmed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would meet with Nawaz Sharif to discuss the draft. He also hoped to involve the PML-N in supporting the finalized amendments between the JUI-F and PPP.
“We aim to include PML-N in this consensus,” Bhutto Zardari said, stressing that the JUI-F-PPP agreement would lay the groundwork for future negotiations. He underscored the goal of addressing public concerns, not individual interests or timing.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized that the party concentrated on noncontroversial constitutional reforms and hoped all political parties would prioritize national interests.
The federal government intends to pass the 26th constitutional amendment through the Senate first, scheduling a session for October 17. The National Assembly will review the amendments on October 18, a day after the Senate’s decision.
