John Cena has confirmed his return to WWE, but not as an in-ring competitor. Instead, the John Cena WrestleMania 42 host announcement reveals that the 17-time world champion will serve as host for the two-night event in Las Vegas.
The 48-year-old shared the news on Monday, March 30, through a video posted on X from the set of his upcoming Netflix film One Attempt Remaining. In his post, Cena said his path had changed since retirement, but added that he was now officially headed to WrestleMania.
WWE soon backed up the announcement with its own message, telling fans in Las Vegas to get ready for Cena’s return.
In the video, Cena addressed speculation about WrestleMania needing a host for its showpiece event at Allegiant Stadium. He said the road was already leading him there and promised fans he would see them at WrestleMania.
Since retirement, my “road” has looked a little different… but now I can officially say I’m headed to WrestleMania!!!! See you in Las Vegas! pic.twitter.com/nyNypOhRpk

His return comes three months after he announced his retirement. Earlier this month, Cena had already hinted at a new chapter during an appearance at MegaCon Orlando, where he said he was working hard to find a useful way to keep contributing to WWE.
Cena begins a new chapter in WWE
Cena’s in-ring career may have ended, but his latest move suggests he is not stepping away from WWE entirely. After losing to Gunther on December 13, he left his sweatbands and sneakers in the ring, a moment that appeared to mark the close of his wrestling run.
Now, hosting WrestleMania 42 appears to be the start of a different role inside the company. That shift also fits with Cena’s recent comments about trying to find a fresh path as a contributing member of WWE.

WrestleMania 42 is scheduled for April 18-19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The source text says the card is expected to feature major matches, including CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship and Cody Rhodes defending his title against Randy Orton. Cena’s role as host adds another high-profile element to one of WWE’s biggest annual events.
