Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly interested in purchasing the Boston Celtics for $6 billion. As one of the most storied franchises in NBA history, the Celtics are currently up for sale, with owner Wyc Grousbeck announcing his intent to sell.
Despite the steep price tag, multiple interested parties have emerged, including billionaire Bezos, who has expressed readiness to invest in the Massachusetts team. Respected sports analyst Bill Simmons highlighted this, noting credible buzz around Bezos’s potential acquisition.
Bezos is ranked the third wealthiest individual globally, with an estimated fortune of $194.7 billion, but if he faces no financial hurdles. However, a notable challenge could be a conflict of interest, given Amazon’s recent exclusive deal to broadcast NBA games. It remains unclear how NBA regulations would address the issue of a team owner owning a broadcasting partner.
Operational challenges are also at play for the Celtics, who do not own their arena, TD Garden. This issue could deter potential buyers but is less likely to affect a financial titan like Bezos.
Simmons also disclosed on his podcast that the NBA has set a $6 billion valuation for the Celtics, mirroring the anticipated price for future expansion teams in cities like Las Vegas, Seattle, and possibly Mexico City. This pricing strategy could result in significant profits for NBA franchises, each earning $400 million from expansion team sales.
Recent sales of NBA franchises include Michael Jordan’s sale of his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for $3 billion and Mark Cuban’s sale of his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks for $3.5 billion. Both transactions reflect substantial valuations in the league’s business dynamics.
