Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s head coach of the red-ball format, has cautioned former cricketers about their public critiques of the national team.
Jason Gillespie emphasized that their comments, particularly on social media and various digital platforms, can significantly impact current players. Gillespie noted that while positive feedback from respected former players can boost morale, negative remarks could have detrimental effects.
The former Australian fast bowler underscored his commitment to protecting his team and maintaining a supportive environment. He expressed concern that harsh criticisms could erode this safe space, potentially leading to frustration among players and staff.
Additionally, Gillespie voiced frustration regarding his reduced authority within the team’s management structure. Following recent administrative changes by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), he and Test skipper Shan Masood were removed from their roles on the selection committee and lost their influence over pitch preparations.
Gillespie highlighted the challenges of adapting to a different administrative culture within Pakistani cricket, acknowledging the formation of three different selection panels since his tenure began. Despite these challenges, he remains focused on improving team performance and player development.
In his dialogue with Sky Sports, Gillespie reiterated his commitment to querying and seeking clarity on team management decisions, asserting that it is within his rights as head coach.
