The Jamaat-e-Islami protest outside the Sindh Assembly turned tense on Saturday after police used teargas and baton charges to disperse workers attempting to stage a sit-in over Karachi’s civic issues.
The religio-political party announced the demonstration as part of its “Jeenay Do Karachi Ko” campaign. It demanded urgent measures to address deteriorating roads, drainage problems and shortcomings in the local body system.
Tensions escalated when protesters tried to move beyond barricades placed along routes leading to the provincial legislature. In response, police fired teargas shells and used batons to push the crowd back.
At least one party worker was reportedly injured during the clash. Meanwhile, several police personnel were hurt after protesters allegedly threw stones. Authorities also detained at least 10 workers and confiscated the party’s sound system mounted on a truck.

Clash Erupts During JI Karachi Protest
Despite the police action, some Jamaat-e-Islami workers managed to move past barricades and reach the vicinity of the Sindh Assembly. The situation remained tense, and a heavy police contingent was deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
According to a party spokesperson, the administration blocked key access routes, forcing protesters to hold their sit-in on a nearby road instead of directly outside the assembly building.
JI leaders, including Muslim Parvez, Abdul Razzaq and Sindh Assembly member Muhammad Farooq, reportedly attempted to initiate talks with officials. However, the spokesperson claimed that no representative from the local administration was present at the venue.

Speaking to the media, MPA Farooq stated that party workers would continue their protest on the road. He reiterated that the demonstration focused on Karachi’s civic infrastructure and governance concerns.
The protest highlights growing political friction over municipal services and the functioning of the local government system in Karachi. The city has long faced criticism over road conditions, drainage systems and service delivery.
