Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced citywide sit-ins across Karachi at 5:00 pm on Friday to protest damaged roads and what it describes as “oppressive” e-challans.
The party said the demonstrations aim to highlight poor road conditions and the rising number of traffic-related deaths caused by uncontrolled heavy vehicles. JI urged authorities to fix infrastructure faults and review traffic enforcement practices.
According to the protest schedule, sit-ins will take place at key locations, including Star Gate on Shahrah-e-Faisal, Dawood Chowrangi, Korangi Crossing, Noorani Kabab House Chowrangi, Power House Chowrangi, Tibet Centre, University Road near Mausamiat, Dolmen Mall Hyderi, Liaquatabad No. 10, Sohrab Goth, Orangi Town No. 5, Hub River Road, and Pracha Chowk in Sher Shah.

The protests come amid growing debate over Karachi’s e-challan system, which authorities introduced on October 27 under the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS). The system replaced manual ticketing with AI-enabled CCTV cameras that detect violations, including speeding, red-light running, and helmet non-compliance.
DIG Traffic Police Pir Muhammad Shah has stated that traffic accidents have dropped by nearly 50% since the system’s launch. However, he acknowledged that no enforcement system can eliminate accidents.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Muhammad Farooq submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly calling for an immediate review of the e-challan policy. He described the fines as excessive and demanded the withdrawal of the notification imposing Rs5,000 penalties on motorcyclists.
