The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police filed an FIR against an “unidentified suspect” for allegedly holding a leopard captive at the DHA Phase 2 housing complex.
On Thursday, a wild leopard assaulted residents of District 2 of a private housing community, injuring at least six persons, including two employees of the wildlife department. After an eight-hour operation by Rescue 1122, Islamabad Police and ICT district management failed to capture the leopard.
Witnesses reported that at 3:30 p.m., a huge leopard assaulted a security guard after breaking into the crowd. The leopard bit the waist of the guard, causing him to fall to the ground.
The injured security guards were transported to PIMS Hospital by private security guards, and 1122 was dispatched to the incident. Rescuers from Rawalpindi hurried to the scene but could not operate due to a lack of leopard control equipment, so they contacted the Wildlife Management Department in Islamabad (IWMD).
The IWMD eventually apprehended the stray cat and published a video of it in “excellent health.” But, according to sources, residents of DHA Phase II were so terrified by the encounter that they summoned Rescue 1122 and the Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department to capture the animal.
More legislation allowing wild animals to be kept as pets
The ICT police reported on Twitter that PPK 324/289 had been assigned to the incident. “An incident report has been filed at the Sahara Police Station,” authorities said, adding that the suspect has not been “identified” but that “the cheetah was kept as a pet in someone’s home.”
“The accused kept this hazardous animal in custody and endangered the lives of the locals,” the police told the locals, adding that legal actions would be begun and the guilty would be apprehended shortly.
