Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy is setting up a one-billion-euro fund for artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.
Meloni announced ahead of a G7 technology ministers’ meeting, emphasizing AI’s significance. The fund aims to catalyze additional investment by using new and existing resources to foster an “Italian way” of AI development.
Meloni highlighted Italy’s efforts to draft national AI legislation. This legislation will complement the EU’s pioneering AI law, focusing on ethical principles and supporting domestic enterprises. She stressed the importance of ethical guidelines prioritising human rights and needs in AI’s evolution.
The emergence of AI, especially after Microsoft’s OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, has sparked worldwide debate. Under Italy’s G7 presidency, AI is a priority.
The forthcoming G7 ministers’ gathering in Verona and Trento seeks to advance ethical AI use in the public sector and encourage voluntary adherence to a previously established G7 code of conduct for AI development.
