The world-renowned Italian ship ‘Amerigo Vespucci’ inaugurated docking at Karachi Port on Saturday, illuminating the “city of lights” with its presence.

The visit of the 93-year-old Amerigo Vespucci to Karachi underscores its 2023-25 global tour across 30 countries, illustrating the strengthening relationship between Italy and Pakistan.

Amerigo Vespucci, a jewel of Italian naval craftsmanship, embarked on its global journey on July 1, 2023, under the Italian government’s “World Tour—Villaggio Italia” initiative.

While in Karachi, Amerigo Vespucci will bring Villaggio Italia, a mini expo that displays contemporary Italian art, fashion, and technology, offering a taste of Italy’s rich cultural heritage.

The Italian ambassador, consul general, and senior Pakistan Navy officers were present to welcome the Amerigo Vespucci at the port. Italian sailors aboard described the vessel as an “Italian floating embassy” to foster stronger international relations.

During their stay, the sailors will engage with top Pakistan Navy officials and explore attractions in Karachi. The ship’s itinerary is extensive, with scheduled stops at ports on five continents, underlining its role in promoting Italy’s maritime legacy.

This port call follows a visit on October 15 by the Italian Navy’s Carrier Strike Group, which included an aircraft carrier and a frigate. This earlier visit, also aimed at boosting regional maritime security and defence cooperation, marked the first-ever arrival of an Italian aircraft carrier in Pakistan. The carrier group was received by Pakistan Navy’s senior officials and Italian Ambassador Marilina Armellin.

The Amerigo Vespucci’s visit highlights historical maritime connections and paves the way for future collaborations between Italy and Pakistan.
