On June 1, 2025, Israel marked a historic milestone in modern warfare by becoming the first country to use a high-power laser weapon to shoot down enemy drones during the ongoing Gaza conflict, part of the “Swords of Iron War.”
According to Defence News, the Israeli laser weapon system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, successfully intercepted drones, which the Israeli Air Force has also confirmed.
The prototype, integrated into the Aerial Defence Array, directs an intense light beam to heat and destroy targets. Brigadier General Yehuda Elmakayes, head of Israel’s defence research directorate, hailed the “world’s first successful high-power laser interceptions,” per Reuters.

Video footage from the Ministry of Defence showed the Rafael laser defence igniting a drone’s wingtip, causing it to crash, demonstrating its effectiveness against threats from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi forces.
The Gaza drone interception system, designed to counter low-cost drones, saves expensive missile interceptors, aligning with the forthcoming Iron Beam network, per The Times of Israel. Rafael’s statement emphasised, “These interceptions saved civilian lives and protected national assets.” The technology’s success has sparked global interest, with X users noting, “Israel’s laser defence is a game-changer!” though some raised concerns about escalation risks, per Al Jazeera.
Deployed amid heightened conflict, the high-power laser 2025 system addresses drone threats with a crucifix-like design and V-tail, common among Iran-backed groups. The IDF’s focus on minimising civilian harm through precision strikes underscores the system’s tactical advantage, though Gaza’s Health Ministry reported civilian casualties in related operations, per BBC News. The Iron Beam system integration aims to bolster Israel’s multi-layered defence strategy.
Israel’s pioneering use of the Israeli laser weapon redefines aerial defence, offering a cost-effective solution to drone warfare. As the Rafael laser defence sets a precedent, it could influence global military strategies, raising questions about technology proliferation and regional stability in the Gaza conflict.
