Protests swept across the globe after Israel’s navy halted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a 41-ship convoy carrying aid to Gaza. The flotilla, which sailed from Barcelona last month, aimed to break Israel’s blockade amid UN-reported famine conditions in Gaza after nearly two years of conflict. Demonstrators from Europe to South America rallied, urging stronger sanctions against Israel.
In Barcelona, 15,000 people marched, chanting “Gaza, you are not alone” and “Boycott Israel.” However, riot police clashed with some protesters attempting to breach barriers, forcing them back. Among the ships stopped was one carrying former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, who now face deportation.

In Dublin, hundreds gathered outside the Irish parliament, drawing parallels to Ireland’s historical struggles. Miriam McNally, whose daughter joined the flotilla, told AFP, “I’m worried sick, but so proud of her stand for humanity.” Similarly, Paris saw 1,000 protesters at Place de la Republique, while Marseille police arrested 100 for blocking the offices of Eurolinks, a weapons firm linked to Israel.
Demonstrations also flared in Berlin, The Hague, Tunis, Brasilia, and Buenos Aires. In Brussels, 3,000 rallied at the European Parliament, demanding the EU end financial ties with Israel. A protester named Isis urged protection for the flotilla, criticising the bloc’s support for Israel.

In Istanbul, thousands marched to the Israeli embassy, with student Elif Bozkurt calling for the flotilla’s release and an end to academic ties with Israel. Meanwhile, in Geneva, young protesters lit a bonfire, facing police pushback at the Mont Blanc bridge. Athens activists, led by Petros Konstantinou of KEERFA, condemned the interception as a “barbaric escalation” by an “apartheid state.”
In Kuala Lumpur, dozens protested outside the US embassy, Israel’s key ally. Ili Farhan, 43, expressed anger, saying, “They’re just bringing aid and baby food. This arrest is unjust.”

Italy saw thousands protest in Rome, Milan, Torino, Florence, and Bologna, ahead of a general strike planned for October 3 by major unions in solidarity with the flotilla. In Rome, 10,000 marched near the Colosseum, slamming Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s support for Israel and chanting, “The genocidal machine must stop.”

The protests reflect growing global frustration with Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, where nearly 44,000 deaths have been reported since October 2023. The flotilla, carrying over 400 activists, including Greta Thunberg, aimed to deliver critical supplies but faced Israel’s naval blockade.
