Recent diplomatic challenges, harsh global criticism of a Gaza strike, and widespread protests on Western campuses have deepened feelings of isolation among Israelis. Despite expecting unwavering support from allies post-Hamas’s October 7 attack, sentiments shifted as Israel’s military actions in Gaza intensified.
The situation worsened after an Israeli strike on a displaced persons’ camp in Rafah, which reportedly killed at least 45 people. Global condemnation ensued from major cities worldwide, and social media echoed this sentiment, with millions expressing outrage.
Yet, many Israelis remain steadfast, supporting their military actions as a necessary defence. Netanel Aronson, a 24-year-old Israeli-American, expressed unyielding support for the Israeli military, emphasizing personal prayers for their safety.
The humanitarian toll has been heavy; Gazan officials report over 36,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died since October 7. Nathalie, a 50-year-old Israeli, described the conflict as a universal tragedy, highlighting the widespread perception of hostility towards Israelis, whom she feels are seen as colonizers despite many Jews viewing themselves as refugees since Israel’s 1948 creation.
This period has also seen Israel face significant diplomatic challenges. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have taken actions against top Israeli officials, exacerbating feelings of global opposition. Recognition of a Palestinian state by several European countries has further isolated Israel diplomatically.
Israelis’ perception of global bias against them, particularly viewing international critiques as anti-Semitic, complicates their acceptance of international judicial decisions. Political analyst Dahlia Scheindlin notes the profound impact on Israeli morale, seeing the conflict as existential.
In response to the global “All Eyes on Rafah” social media campaign, Israelis have launched their campaigns, focusing on issues like the search for hostages. Recent surveys show a strong majority of Israelis believe in the necessity and appropriateness of their military’s actions in Gaza. However, the conflict continues to deepen divisions and heighten tensions.
