Islamabad’s water charges have risen by 200% to 300%, starting January 2024, marking the first increase since 2017.
An official reported that the Municipal Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) generates Rs700 million monthly, covering salaries and maintenance.
New rates vary by plot size, with charges ranging from Rs 480 for smaller plots to Rs 3,500 for plots over 2,000 yards. Model village homes face Rs600 monthly charges, while government housing costs range from Rs240 to Rs940.
Water meters charge varied rates, with Rs480 per 1,000 gallons for usage up to 5,000 gallons and Rs70 per gallon beyond that. Commercial rates apply to hotels, motels, and buildings, with specific charges for different businesses.
Despite hikes, Islamabad’s rates remain lower than those in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and other Punjab metros, where charges can exceed Rs 2,000 for homes up to 10 marlas.
