A senior general with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Razi Moussavi, was martyred in an Israeli strike in Syria on Monday. The incident has prompted the military force to vow revenge for what they termed “this crime.”
Moussavi, identified as a key advisor of the Quds Force—the foreign arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—was recognized as one of the most experienced in the unit. The IRGC has confirmed his death in a missile attack and has declared that Israel “will pay for this crime.”
Iranian state media reported Moussavi’s death, occurring in the Zeinabiyah district near Damascus. He was noted for his role in providing logistical support to groups in Syria backed by Tehran, positioned against Israel. There has been no immediate comment from Israel, which has maintained a stance against Iran’s expansion in Syria. The IRGC’s statement highlighted Moussavi’s close association with General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in 2020.
The Impact of the Strike
The strike’s aftermath was covered by Iran’s state TV, which reported that three missiles targeted Moussavi. This report was accompanied by footage of smoke rising from the strike area. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, reported Israeli strikes in areas used by Iranian groups and Hezbollah in the Sayyida Zeinab area, confirming reports of explosions and smoke witnessed by residents.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions in the region, with Israel intensifying its attacks, especially against Hezbollah and Iran-backed forces, in response to conflicts with Hamas and other groups. The broader impact of these conflicts has been significant, with numerous casualties reported in Gaza and other areas.
