Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is gearing up for a mega auction expected at the end of November or early December.
Mega auctions introduce unique challenges, particularly regarding player retention strategies. According to The Indian Express, BCCI may allow franchises to retain up to five players, but the Right To Match option will not be available now.
This retention policy could benefit teams like Mumbai Indians, enabling them to keep top players such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya.
BCCI sources informed IANS that the detailed rules and regulations for the auction will be released shortly. Historically, the IPL has conducted significant auctions every four years, with the last major ones in 2014 and 2018, marking the return of the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings after two-year suspensions.
The auction schedule is set for the end of November to early December. The BCCI emphasized that the official rules for the auction are expected to be announced in the coming days.
Previous IPL mega auctions, like those in 2022, allowed teams to retain up to four players. As the three-year cycle concludes, franchises debate the ideal number of players to retain. Some teams advocate for a higher cap, suggesting up to eight players, while others prefer maintaining the current limit of four or five players.
