The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) revealed disturbing findings about a preteen girl whose Instagram account attracted a staggering 92% of followers who were adult men, some of whom were identified in dark web communities.
Instagram’s algorithms reportedly directed users with inappropriate interests to her profile, resulting in an influx of unwelcome comments.
Owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), Instagram has come under scrutiny for its role in incidents involving predatory behaviour towards young girls online. Meta has updated its policies over the years to address such concerns, but according to WSJ, the girl, who remains unidentified, began her Instagram journey at her mother’s encouragement. Initially aspiring to be an influencer and dancer, she connected with peers and received modelling gigs and gifts from top brands.
Despite these opportunities, the platform’s algorithms continued to attract unsuitable attention, escalating when the girl’s follower count exceeded 100,000. Alongside brand sponsorships came disturbing comments about her appearance from older male followers, particularly worsening when she introduced a paid subscription for “super-fans.”
The girl’s father described these followers as part of the industry’s darker side, underscoring ongoing challenges despite Meta’s policy against under-13 accounts. WSJ’s investigation also revealed that Instagram’s algorithms steer users toward inappropriate content without adequate filters.
The girl’s mother actively moderates comments and restricts certain photos to maintain a positive atmosphere. Despite the challenges, the aspiring influencer remains focused on her goals, emphasizing her content’s appeal to young girls interested in fashion and hairstyles.
Previous investigations linked Instagram’s recommendation system to networks seeking illegal content, prompting Meta to address issues like hashtag misuse and improve moderation protocols following software updates and enhanced training for moderators.
