People associated with the IT industry in Pakistan face ongoing anxiety over potential “internet slowdowns or shutdowns” due to the current government’s political necessities. Despite this, officials have yet to address these concerns effectively.
For months, persistent internet disruptions have caused considerable inconvenience and financial strain across various sectors. These outages disrupt operations for freelancers, startups, and remote workers, leading to financial losses and missed opportunities. E-commerce and online banking also suffer, impacting transaction activities.
Students find themselves cut off from essential online educational resources. IT professionals have voiced their frustration with the government’s internet access management to counteract “propaganda or terrorism” online.
A software house owner, Muhammad Azhar, highlighted that freelancers and startups are particularly vulnerable to government actions affecting the internet. He noted that while premium internet services used by larger software houses are less affected, the potential banning of unregistered VPNs could have devastated the IT industry.
He also criticized the government’s efforts to install firewalls, pointing out their ineffectiveness due to the widespread adoption of VPNs following these measures.
Another IT professional, Nasir Ali, shared concerns about losing clients due to unreliable internet. “Our company relies on shared internet, which suffers whenever the government imposes restrictions for political reasons,” he said.
Ali emphasized that with the increasing demand for internet services, the government should prioritize upgrading its infrastructure rather than imposing further restrictions, as this would complicate matters for everyone in the country.
Industry professionals have urged the government to reconsider its stance on internet restrictions to communicate globally, saying that it does not intend to curb internet access. They argue that mere assurances from the IT ministry and other officials are insufficient to restore confidence among local and international clients.
