Inter Miami has officially announced Lionel Messi, the long-standing FC Barcelona superstar and World Cup winner with Argentina, as their newest Designated Player.
The unveiling signifies the conclusion of an extended endeavour to incorporate the world’s greatest player into North America’s soccer landscape.
However, the path to this event was not without obstacles. Adverse weather conditions in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Area resulted in multiple delays in the announcement ceremony. At one point, there were doubts about the possibility of the ceremony’s postponement or cancellation.
Despite the challenges, the league’s most significant transfer was successfully introduced, signalling Messi’s eagerness to be part of Major League Soccer (MLS) history.
Messi’s Ambition for Inter Miami and MLS
Braving the rain at DRV PNK Stadium, Messi expressed his delight at his arrival in Miami and his anticipation to commence his new journey. He thanked the Miami people for their warm welcome and looks forward to contributing to the club’s growth.
“I really want to start training, competing; I want to win and for this club to keep growing,” Messi shared, highlighting his drive for success and aspiration to propel Inter Miami to greater heights.
Having spent the previous two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) without adding a fifth European Cup to his extensive accolades, Messi decided to take up a new challenge with MLS amidst speculation about a potential return to Barcelona or a shift to Saudi Arabia. As MLS approaches its 30th season, it is experiencing considerable growth, and Messi’s presence further enhances the league’s appeal.
The arrival of Messi, a 10-time La Liga winner, is hoped to lead to an immediate leap in Inter Miami’s standings. He was welcomed by a significant increase in Inter Miami’s fan base despite the less-than-ideal weather, and the reception and support from the fans at the stadium underscore the growing fan culture at Inter Miami.
“We dreamed of not only bringing elite players and the best players but the best player ever to don boots, and his name is Lionel Andrés Messi,” said Jorge Mas, the principal owner of Inter Miami, emphasizing the club’s ambition for excellence.
With plans to relocate to a new stadium by 2025, Inter Miami aspires to attract more high-calibre talent like Messi and his former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets, fostering a dramatic turnaround in the club’s fortunes.
