Innovative Cooling Clothing: Japan’s Answer to Scorching Summers

Japan has been grappling with intensifying summer heat, with the recent July marked as the warmest in a century. This unbearable heat led to severe consequences, with at least 53 individuals succumbing to heatstroke and almost 50,000 needing emergency intervention.

Companies like Workman have ventured beyond their traditional offerings in response to this growing challenge. Originally a manufacturer of attire for construction personnel, Workman discerned a broader market potential and launched jackets equipped with fans for the general public in 2020. These jackets, which range from 12,000 to 24,000 yen ($82-164), integrate two battery-powered electric fans. The experience of wearing them, as described by Workman’s spokesperson Yuya Suzuki, is akin to enjoying the comfort of a household fan, underscoring the burgeoning interest in such innovative solutions.

Japanese turn to wearable tech to beat the heat.

Products Catering to a Vulnerable Aging Population

The severity of Japan’s heat issue is accentuated in Tokyo, which noted its highest average temperature since 1875, clocking in at 28.7 Celsius. This climatic challenge becomes even more significant considering Japan’s demographic structure. Being home to the second-oldest population globally, following Monaco, the elderly are especially susceptible to the heat’s adverse effects. Tragically, the past half-decade has seen over 80% of heat-induced fatalities among senior citizens.

Recognizing this dire need, companies like MI Creations have been actively innovating. Nozomi Takai from MI Creations underlines the escalating measures being adopted by individuals and corporate entities to mitigate the risks of heatstroke. Among their offerings are neck-cooling tubes. After a brief 20-minute refrigeration, these tubes can offer an hour’s respite from the heat when worn around the neck.

Innovative Products to Stay Cool

Tokyo’s Liberta is another firm joining the fray with its unique clothing range. Their line-up includes T-shirts and arm sleeves that employ specific prints imbued with materials such as xylitol. Upon contact with moisture or sweat, these substances elicit a cooling sensation for the wearer.
