On May 31, 2025, India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan confirmed that Pakistan shot down six Indian fighter jets, including three French Rafale planes, during a four-day conflict earlier this month.
The incident involving India and Pakistan jets began with missile strikes by India on six Pakistani locations on May 6-7, marking a significant escalation.
Pakistan’s Air Force downed three Rafale jets, one Su-30MKI, one Mirage 2000, and one MiG-29 within 40 minutes, without crossing the border.
The Indian strikes targeted sites like Subhan Mosque in Bahawalpur and Bilal Mosque in Muzaffarabad. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Chauhan told Bloomberg TV, “What is important is not the jets being downed but why they were shot down,” emphasising India’s post-incident actions over losses.
India’s military confirmed for the first time that it lost an unspecified number of fighter jets in clashes with Pakistan in May.

U.S. and French officials have confirmed Pakistan’s success in the recent conflict. A senior U.S. official told CNN that Pakistani forces, using aircraft acquired from China, shot down an Indian jet. A French intelligence officer also confirmed the loss of a Rafale fighter jet. Additionally, The Washington Post verified the presence of debris from both a Rafale and a Mirage 2000, with insights from experts like Trevor Ball. These reports affirm the capabilities of the Pakistan Air Force in the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict.
Chauhan dismissed nuclear war risks, focusing on strategic lessons. The Rafale jets’ downing highlights Pakistan’s air defence strength, shifting regional power dynamics. India’s admission, amid ongoing tensions post-Pahalgam attack, underscores the need for de-escalation, facilitated by a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10.
The India-Pakistan jets clash reveals vulnerabilities in India’s air force and escalates regional rivalry. Chauhan’s confirmation at a global forum like the Shangri-La Dialogue amplifies the General Anil Chauhan narrative, impacting India-Pakistan relations and international perceptions
