U.S. President Donald Trump announced on May 10, 2025, via Truth Social that India and Pakistan agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following intense U.S.-mediated talks, halting a four-day exchange of military strikes.
CNN journalist Nic Robertson reported that Pakistan’s powerful retaliatory strikes under Operation Bunyaan al Marsoos, targeting Indian military sites, forced New Delhi into an urgent retreat, paving the way for the ceasefire amid global diplomatic pressure.
The conflict escalated on May 7, 2025, when India’s unprovoked cross-border attack killed 31 Pakistani civilians, prompting Pakistan to down five Indian Air Force jets, including three Rafales, and nearly 80 drones, including Israeli-made IAI Herons.
On Friday, India struck three Pakistani airbases Nur Khan, Murid, and Shorkot—but caused no damage, per Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry. In response, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyaan al Marsoos on Saturday, hitting Indian airbases and a BrahMos missile storage site.

Pakistan’s Operation Bunyaan al Marsoos targeted Indian military sites, forcing a ceasefire after India’s retreat, as per CNN’s Nic Robertson.
Pakistan-India Ceasefire Negotiations
Robertson, citing a source present at high-level talks, revealed Pakistan was on a “military pause” to allow diplomacy until India’s airbase attacks prompted a “relentless barrage” of Pakistani missiles. This pushed India to seek mediation through U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Described as a “now or never moment,” the ceasefire was brokered after intense international pressure from the U.S., G7, and others, with Trump calling it a triumph of “Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”

Robertson highlighted water rights, tied to the disputed Indus Waters Treaty, as a critical issue for Pakistan moving forward. The treaty’s suspension by India after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26, remains contentious. At the same time, the ceasefire pauses hostilities, unresolved disputes over Kashmir and water access could challenge long-term stability.
