Local Government (LG) elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s first phase have been dominated by independent candidates (AJK).
From a total of 649 seats, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared the official results for 549 district and union councils, municipal corporations, municipal committees, and town committees.
Independent candidates have won 170 of the 549 available seats, followed by the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) with 134 seats.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has won 122 seats, while Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) has won 99.
In the first phase of the AJK LG elections, the All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference (MC) won 22 seats, while the Jammu Kashmir peoples’ party (JK-PP) won only one.
On 53 of the 74 district council seats for which results were declared, PTI won 17, followed by 16 independents, PPP with 9, PMLN with 7, Muslim Conference with 3, and JK PP with one seat.
Out of a total of 535 union council seats, the results for 349 were published, with independents winning the majority with 131 seats, followed by PPP with 75 seats, PTI with 65, PMLN with 60, MC with 17, and TLP with one.
The PMLN won the capital’s Municipal Corporation with 12 of 36 seats, followed by the PTI with 8, the PPP and independents with 7, and the MC with two seats.
The PPP won three municipal committee seats out of seven announced results, while the PTI and PMLN each won two seats. Out of fourteen seats in four town committees, the results for nine were revealed, with PMLN claiming four, followed by three independents and PTI with two.
On Sunday, the first phase of local government elections was held in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after a wait of nearly three decades.
